how do i set vsftpd user permissions

Ok this is my setup. I am adding a few files for my friends so i took my ftp server off strickly anonymous access and set up a password account. Everyone can log in fine and view the public directory, but the passworded account "friend" cannot cd into the Private directory or the Upload directory.

/var/ftp <---root
/var/ftp/pub <-----everyone can access
/var/ftp/Private <---friend account should be able to use
/var/ftp/Upload <---friend account should be able to use

permission set

pub drwxrwxr-x
Private drwxr-x--- group=ftpfriend (friend is a member)
Upload drwxr-x--- group=ftpfriend (friend is a member)

the account friend is for construction purposes and other accounts will be added later once i get this thing working. Hope you guys can help.
Thanks

From what you've posted, that should work. I would go back through and verify all the permissions and make sure that friend is indeed a member of the ftpfriend group. Another thing to check would be to make sure that you haven't configured the ftp server to chroot the users into the pub directory. Btw, what is the specific error message when you try to cd?

I verified all the permissions and everything. My friend and i were trying to figure it out when it just started working. It wasnt working one moment and then it was working the next. I didnt change any of the permissions or settings. The error i was getting was something along the lines of I dont have permission to view the directory. I dont have a clue, just glad its working.

Did it reboot and then start working or was it just the standard linux voodoo? Either way, glad you got it working.

It just started working. My friend logged onto my server, tried to access the folder and couldnt. Asked me to verify the permissions so i [logged in as root already so i could change stuff] right clicked on the folder>properties and verfied the permissions, clicked ok and sent them off to him. He tried again and it worked.

I have very little experience with linux but i find that odd that it doesnt work one moment, then works the next without changing any settings. Especially after i spend a couple of days trying to figure out the problem and there isnt one...

You might want to check the FTP servers logs and/or the system logs to see if you can find any messages that might tell you what was going on. Aside from that, it's hard to speculate what it could have been.
