How do I configure ports?

Hi, I am fairly new to linux, and I have yet to figure out how to configure my firewall. Right now I am having a problem using the soulseek linux client where I cannot browse other users' files and such. The faq suggests that a firewall or router is blocking the ports which the client operates from. So I need to configure my ports and make sure those ports are open. How do I do that?

I am using Mepis 3.2.1-1 if that makes any difference...

I can't do better than giving you a link to a good documentation about your problem. See The Linux Network Administrator's Guide (it's free). There's a chapter about firewalls. You will find which firewall you have and the book gives you all the commands to see and edit your configuration.
It's there : http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/linag2/book/ch09.html
