How can my gmail account be stolen, is there viruses on Linux?

They stole my gmail account for spam. Why? Isn't Linux and firefox safe? I don't know how did they do that? Through a background virus or through steeling the information in my network? I don't understand how. Any body can tell me why?

Chances are your credentials weren't stolen but it just looks like it came from your account. If you can't or don't want to share details here (attach, not post, message with complete headers as plain text) then at least share with Google support.

We don't know your distribution details, Firefox version, use of Java, javascript or plugins, browsing habits etc etc so that's a rhetorical question.

How about:
- not using SSL for everything Google,
- using a lame password or phrase,
- logging into from different locations leaving cookies everywhere,
- logging in having browsers "autologin" enabled,
- having your recovery phrase phished,
- having your local browsers passwd storage leeched,
- using an insecure browser,
- using an insecure OS that has a keylogger installed,
- using some (illegal?) app that purportedly decrypts passwords but is actually a trojan?
