How can i get parental control with no fee ?
I have known that DansGuardian is useful, but it requires URLBlacklist to complete itself ? Can you help me? Thank for all ideas! |
How about this Firefox extension?
https://addons.mozilla.org/extension...nfo.php?id=226 Though, honestly, you shouldn't prevent your kids from seeing stuff--just educate them. People, especially kids these days, can get around any restrictions you throw at them. |
From what kind of danger are you trying to protect your kids?
Protect your computer first. There's a scheme of URL blacklistin' that uses /etc/hosts explained here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm It's oriented to ads and billing sites I haven't used it on Unix though, but the format is the same. Now, I don't think it's ok to try to "protect" them from information, not even porn. Kids are getting to "know" what the world and modern life is at an ever increasing early age, and it's the nature way that pushes everyone to adapt to this complex world (things are not what they used to be). Education is the best option. Don't understimate your kids. If they find a wall, they would try to circunvent it. Censuring creates a psychic wall too between you and them. |
He might work for a school or something, guys. We don't know.
Anyway, whatever you do, implement content filters so that they cannot be bypassed using a simple proxy or search engine. |

I would:
1) Enable Safesearch on Google. 2) Use DansGuardian - True Web Content Filtering for All 3) Use Firefox along with BlockXXX Extension and the Adblock extension. 4) Use a HOSTS file Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File Other than setting Firefox/KDE up in Kiosk mode and only allowing set websites, the above is the best you can probably do without using a pay service. You could try Welcome to My Linux ISP, it works with Linux . (Disclaimer, it is a pay service.) You could also use Squid and only allow certain websites. Linux.com | A child-safe SMTP whitelist with Postfix and MySQL |

It means you don't say, "You can't do this. I won't allow you to do this." It means you say, "I don't think you should do this because of X, Y, and Z. I myself don't do it because of X, Y, and Z. Do you have any questions about it?" And you model by example. I never had any reason to do drugs because my parents never did drugs. My parents didn't drink heavily or cheat on their taxes or shoplift, so I didn't do those things. It's not because they said, "We absolutely forbid you from doing drugs or cheating on your taxes." They educated me on choices and modeled those choices. I guarantee if you forbid your kid from doing something and even try to put on some "parental controls" to ensure that she can't do it... she'll want to do it more and find a way to do it anyway. |

It's like a lot of parents I know who think their daughters are virginal angels when they're really manipulative and promiscuous. As long as they put on a good show for Mommy and Daddy, then the parents can turn a blind eye to what's really going on. |
