How can I get certificates to use with Evolution or Thunderbird?

Hi

I would like be able to digitally sign my emails and also encrypt my embolus between my group of friends. I use Evolution and Thunderbird. How can I get or create certificates for myself and my friends? I tried kgpg to generate the keys. Then I exported the secret key and the public key. But I could not import them to either evolution or Thunderbird. Is it possible to use gpg to generate keys? If not how can I generate the certificates? I don't need a certificate authority to identify me for unknown recipients. I just need my friends to know that the mails I send them is from me and also to encrypt the emails so that nobody else could read them other than the intended recipient. (If I have the public key of my friend, then I can encrypt the email can't I?).

Thanks

Neranjana

Hi

Yes. That worked with thunderbird. But I still can't import the keys with Evolution. I thought it was a problem with gpg when it generated the keys. But not it seems Thunderbird uses the same gpg and could work with the keys but it looks Evolution can't import the keys. Has anybody used Evolution 2.2.3 and digitally signed emails or encrypted emails? I am using Evolution 2.2.3 on Mandriva 2006. When I opened evolution through a console and tried to import the key file, the following error message gets thrown in the console.

importing pkcs12 from `/home/neranjana/Neranjana Karunaratne (Neranjana Key) myname@mydomain.com (0x5166EE35) pub-sec.asc'
handle_error (7)

I changed my email address to myname@mydomain.com on this post.

Does anybody have any idea how to import the certificates to evolution?

Thanks

Neranjana
