a honey pot is basically a psuedo vulnerable server - it masquerades as a box running services you configure and basically this invites attack - see who's out there....

Thanks satinet,

Just out of curiousity how does this help us?
Is it used for finding new weaknesses in different distributions? Or is it
used to track un-ethical hackers?

Honeypots basically present a bunch of worthless data that seems valid to attract hackers looking for info. Or a honeypot is used as a box that possesses holes that hackers can attack. The hackers will learn when it's too late that they have been logged and tracked considering their efforts.

That is what I have read regarding the use of honeypots. I perosnally have never set one up. There was a post on the board where the U.S. govt. used honeypots to track hackers around the world. Basically the hackers were looking for a medium to launch attacks from.

Basically if you hack from your own box then your an idiot. Why not steal another platform and then conduct your operations from there but that can cost someone.

And if you are currently hacking or creating a virus then your looking for a nice long jail term these days. It's not worth the time or effort considering the penalties .

Not that anyone cares much these days but you probably mean "crackers", not "hackers".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker

Or easier : a true honeypot (tm)

Use Windows2003 with or without firewall, put IIS and plug a hub on it. Take some popcorn and wait.
