Hard drive clicking away while surfing

I was checking out some stuff on the web and all of a sudden my hard drive starts clicking away like i was installing a program. So i unplugged my Ether cable and ran top and UpdateDB was running at the top of the list. Is that normal?
Also how the heck do i get firestarter running under a user if you need root priveledges?
Thanks

updatedb is a program used by the locate and slocate programs, for finding files on your disk. It's probably scheduled to run periodically, to keep up-to-date with any new files on your disks, so it's nothing to worry about. Clicking, though? That could be bad A clicking noise with hard drives often means they're about to die (though I have some drives that have been clicking for years and still work fine).

Mybe clicking was the wrong word, sorry. Its not the drive going bad. I just meant reading and writing. I run Updatedb every so often, I didnt know that it does it automatically.
