hacking/cracking

I'd like to find information on breaking into my machine for EDUCATIONAL purposes. Any information on "hacking" or "cracking" into my computer would be nice. If this is the kind of thing I'm not supposed to post, then I apoligize. I just want to know how to do these things. The information I previously found was pretty weak and/or was not relavent. Thanks in advance (even if somebody closes it).

It's not really the sort of thing that should be posted about, but I would advise you to look at how to prevent cracking attacks, and then see if you can figure out what could be used and how?

I have a similar inquiry. I am new to Linux and I am in the process of setting up a FTP server using Red Hat 8.0 (vsftpd). What are the most common mistakes or oversights that I should be looking to patch, plug, fix, disable, etc.

Lackluster, soz I can't give any pointers here, but you shouldn't have any probs finding stuff to study on or muck around with. If you don't you either didn't search in the right places or didn't search well enough. There's enough (e)books on programming and networking, security sites, vulnerability/discussion mailinglists and scriptkiddie/cracker/wannabee fora and exploit depots around.

Anget_Preacher, not to sound lazy, but you really should search this forum, there should be enough pointers to procedures, sites etc, etc lying around here from the past year.

thanks for the replies.....

Why the crying? We're not likely to just hand out information to potentially crack into others machines, now, are we? I gave you a bloody huge clue as to how you would find out about it... but I'll give you a more obvious hint:

If you make a personal security system (and I'm not talking about computers, here) to be resistant to attacks with a hammer, then what would you search for if you wanted to know how to attack others? A hammer, perhaps? All you need to do is see what the anti-hacking software protects against and then see if you can find that very tool...

relax, I was joking :) (sorry, wasn't obvious though).
I found your advice helpful Thymox, though I had already thought of that. I only posted here because I expected somebody would have been down this road before and had some cool l33t0 linxz to give out ;)
