group passwords

Using redhat 8.0 with shadow security. I create three users
(user1, user2, user3) and grouptest with membership of user2 and user3 only.

As expected, user2 and user3 can access the group via the newgrp command without password prompting.

Created group password with "gpasswd" command. Tried to access the group as user1. I got prompted for the password but it was not accepted and user1 was denied access.

How can I get the newgrp command to accept a user who knows the group password?
