GnuPG Key on simple server

I'm trying to create a GPG Key on my server, problem is I think I'm running so little on it that when it tries to seed the key there isn't enough going on so it hangs at the key creation asking for more input.

Can you think of anything I can run on the server at the same time that would help?

I've played around with copying keys across (gratuitously copying the key file and using --export, though I may have done this incorrectly) but am I right in thinking that I need a key on the server to sign any moved keys?

Thanks.
Gareth.
