GDM login screen

I have the KDE desktop loaded on my Debian machine. I much prefer the GDM login screen. Is there any way of loading the GDM login without getting the entire GDM3?

You want GDM but you don't want GDM3? Can you explain a little more? What DM are you using now?

I recently did a completer reinstall with Debian Stable (Buster) with options "Debian desktop" and "KDE".
In order to allow root logins, (yeah, I've had the lecture that root login is dangerous) the instructions are to reset the field for allowable logins to 0 (root account). That enables login to every account in the system, such as CUPS. The Gnome login prompt is an editable field instead of scrolling thru all the other accounts.
