Free AVG - is something like it necessary??
Hey everyone,
What is your opinions about running an anti-virus program in linux, like Free AVG ( http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1)?
I mean, is it really necessary? I thought Linux is famous for being secure and not getting viruses.
What are your opinions?

I've heard it's more about not transmitting virus' to friends using Windows/Macs or protecting possible infections with virtualized (Xen) and emulated (WINE) systems.
I can see in a dual-boot system, using AVG or Panda or whomever from Linux and scan a Windows (Mac) partition and clean it out.
Better yet, have a LiveCD with AV installed to toss into an infected Windows system and cleanse the system. It may be out there already, I haven't really looked yet.
Linux may eventually be targeted for virus' and the like (though their success rate will likely be lower) so I'm glad there are some AV programs out there, working through their bugs now before-the-fact.
Of course nothing replaces cautious computing and many Linux users are more concious of this than the general masses. As Linux grows in the consumer market then this advantage will slowly erode. Although people's experience with Windows may raise the level of attention of these users.
