Firewall Question

Hi everybody. I am very new to Linux, I just installed it the other day, and I am starting to get the hang of it...the basic stuff anyway. I am on a college LAN server and I wanted to know how to set up a firewall. I don't even know where to begin....any pointers would be great...thanks.

I run a firewall program called, Firestarter. It stealths all your ports so that, for all practical purposes, your machine appears invisible on the internet.

Check out the website at Firestarter

Once you got hand on your linux experience, and anyway you're in college, so you are encouraged to learn, take a deep look at iptables (2.4.x kernels) and/or ipchains (2.4.x, 2.2.x kernels). I won't suggest ipfwadm (it was lon time ago until 2.2 kernel went live). Good tutorials and sample scripts can be found at http://linuxguruz.org
All the pretty GUI's like Firestarter are just front-ends to iptables/ipchains.
