Are you using a rpm buiilt for SuSE? If not, try one of the SuSE 9.X versions here (do a search for firestarter):
http://rpm.pbone.net/

If that still doesn't work, try compiling it from source.

OK, another try: according to pin (package information, a very useful command), the package shlibs5 contains libpopt.so.0

Come on, don't give up so fast. Linux is not Windows that needs to be re-installed every 2nd reboot

Have you checked if the library is present on your system? If a library of a similar version is installed, it sometimes helps to apply a dirty fix: create a symlink to the present file and name it libpopt.so.0

I just informed myself a little about firestarter. What I can see on their homepage is that version 1.0.3 requires gnome 2.6 or higher. I am not sure which version is available for SUSE 9.0, but maybe it helps if you use another version. An alternative is compiling from source (then you have influence on the location of the libraries).

Maybe you could briefly describe what caused the trouble and how you finally solved it. It would help others with the same problem.
