i've posted on another forum but still no answer..
i try installind firestarter using an rpm package but it sends the following error when i try to execute it "libpopt.so.0" not found...
ok..I'll try doing both things, but first i'm going to start over on everything (reinstalling SuSE) and all the packages because i think i have a mess. anyway i'll get back to you probably tomorrow.

Come on, don't give up so fast. Linux is not Windows that needs to be re-installed every 2nd reboot
Have you checked if the library is present on your system? If a library of a similar version is installed, it sometimes helps to apply a dirty fix: create a symlink to the present file and name it libpopt.so.0
I just informed myself a little about firestarter. What I can see on their homepage is that version 1.0.3 requires gnome 2.6 or higher. I am not sure which version is available for SUSE 9.0, but maybe it helps if you use another version. An alternative is compiling from source (then you have influence on the location of the libraries).
