Exactly how do I make a "dead image" of a drive?

Exactly how do I make a "dead image" of a drive?

How do I turn a drive off?

How can data be obtained if the drive is not spinning?

Sorry what's a 'dead image'? Do you mean an image of the drive that's consistent because its taken when its not being accessed? If so then boot a LiveCD (such as knoppix) and use partimage to create and image of the drive.

That big button on your computer that says power? Or pull the power connector out of the drive (when the comp is off) to stop it powering up with the computer

Probably only with equipment found in a data recovery company's laboratory. Time to get out the phone book I think.

if you mean "image of dead drive" - that's impossible without special hardware. If you need a snapshot of your drive you need:
1) unmount all partitions of that drive (umount /dev/???) or at least remount then read-only (mount -o ro /dev/???)
2) free space to store image or a drive large enough to create a copy
3) simply type: dd if=/dev/yourdrivedevice of=/pathtoimage_or_pathtoseconddevice

Quick note: I wouldn't use dd to clone a drive straight onto another one, unless they are *exactly* the same size, I experienced some odd problems doing this. It's fine for making an image file, then you can always dd that back to the drive if you like.

Deleted files will remain deleted and their undeletion procedure is different for each filesystem type. But to be sure that you won't do more harm it is recommended to perform undeletion on a copy (image) of your partition.

From the manual it sounds like it just means not mounted.
