Encrypting the harddrive during install

I remeber when recently installing debian 5.0 on my pc it asking me to encrypt lvm and i split home, tmp, usr etc partitions over a terabyte drive is this in the end secure like even if i get broken in to in the long run? Or just if some one breaks in locally? And is there a way to encrypt hdds after an install of a distro like slackware or freebsd etc how would i do it?

Encrypting the harddrive would only give protection when your hdd is stolen.
