Easiest and best way to setup a firewall

right now i have a dedicated Linux server running red hat 7 that i offer webhosting with.
At home im running a linux machine with Debian.
The reason for the home machine is for testing. I would like to know the best and easiest way to set up a firewall. I have read and read on this and im a super newbie so alot of it doesnt make sense. I cant use gui based ones yet becasue when for instance i try to start firestarter i get "Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: " I also have a problem starting x, but that is something different.
Now my question is will i need to use iptables or ipchains? what does debian have , same for Red Hat.
I know this forum has alot of great info, and trust me i have been all around but i was hoping i could get the answer in more lamens terms for now since im so new to it.
Thank you all in advance!!!

Well there are a few things you could do. (And for your information kernel v.2.4+ has iptables and the rest, ipchains.) You could script your own firewall, with a whitelist and blacklist (what I do), you could get Shorewall by just apt-getting it. It is very easy to setup, but use the samples config files from their website and work from there. Firestarter is okay, but I don't like GUI things. o_o
