Don't know what I am doing - openssh-2.9p2

I finally took the plunge (for the third time) to try and install openssh-2.9p2. I did this

./configure
make
make install
/usr/local/sbin/sshd

Standard install eh eh eh!
Anyway I can't get a PuTTY client to logon. What else do I need to set up and how do I do it?

When I try to connect to the service I get these errors.

login as: test
Sent username "test"
test@192.168.0.1's password:
Access denied
test@192.168.0.1's password:

The only thing I did to install it was what I typed above.

Thanks in Advance

Read the manual. This should get you going.
If not post, check the sshd log for errors, and/or your servers' and clients' config.
