Disabling system shutdown from XDM logon

Dear Everyone

I am using Redhat 9 and I did not notice that an ordinary user could shutdown the system using the GNOME menu until a friend of mine came by poweroff my linux without needing the root password. Now I am puzzled to why this is the default action selected by Redhat.

I changed the permission of /sbin/halt and /sbin/shutdown to 700. Now, an ordinary user cannot shutdown the system using the menu while log on to X11. But anyone can still shutdown or reboot the system from the intial X11 logon window(I am using level 5 as default run level) using the menu given at the bottom of the screen. How can I disable it? I would like to prevent someone from shutting or rebooting the system if they have access to the actual computer.

Sincerely yours,
Sangjin

whoever can access your console and shutdown probably also can push "THE BIG RED BUTTON" for some seconds :-)

in /etc/opt/gnome2/gdm/gdm.conf you can cange:
"RebootCommand=/sbin/shutdown -r now"

I have find the gdm.conf in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf.
In this file RebootCommand is already set to
/sbin/shutdown -r now.
