Define umask in jailed /etc/profile?

If I set up a jailed user, is there any way to define [jail]/etc/profile to have a different umask than the overall system? I copied the system's /etc/profile and changed it but it doesn't seem to actually work.

What's the full commandline to make this user enter his jail? What files get read during that process (strace -eread)?
