default permissions!!

Hello,
I have some questions about Linuy, maybe some one here can help me
what are the default permissions for the following system/files?

Default permissions on Debian for /etc/passwd? (i think= 400)
Default permissions on Red Hat for /etc/passwd? (i think= 644)
Default permissions on Red Hat for /etc/shadow? (i think= 640)

how can i find these settings and display them?

i see your response asap.
kind regards.

I don't use debian, but the permissions for /etc/password are probably also 0644. Non-root programs need to access information in /etc/passwd, so they need read access. /etc/shadow contains the encrypted password and is only root readable. /etc/shadow was created to prevent normal users from reading the list of encrypted passwords and cracking them.

There are many ways, as usual, but for example
Code:
ls -l /etc/passwd /etc/shadow
should give you long (enough) listing.
