Cracking?

Hi,

Does anyone know a good system cracking tutorial which would apply to many platforms? Explaining their vurnerabilities and how to fix those.

Out of curiosity I'd like to learn how easy/hard true cracking is. All steps from finding correct computer/network, detecting weak spots and gaining access etc. stuff. This stuff would also be usefull to me as I'm struggling my way to become adminstrator... slow progress but rewarding.

This far I know that I could use nmap to scan for open ports but that's pretty much it.

You could also point out some good tools besides nmap to use in this learning process.

This would give a good information how to secure a system against cracking and how a cracker think among other things.

I'm not intending to use my knowledge on malicious purposes as I'm surely I would be caught and my way to admin would have a serious obstacle.

Your not likely to be able to find much that is truly universal across all platforms, unless it's very general conceptual stuff like Phrack's "Smashing the Stack for Fun and Profit". For anything more indepth you are going to have to look at an individual exploit and dissect how it work. That being said, it's against our site rules to ask questions regarding cracking, so your going to have to find info about that somewhere else. There's plenty of it available, so google would be a good place to start.
