Talking Compromised wireless security( jack-hole-of-a-neighbor)

Ok,

I am just wondering how to locate a person running a fake AP in my neighborhood. I ran kismet and picked up a device that was not associated with anything and another that had around 10 devices talking to it. I am not interested in breaking in to my neighbors; rather, I wish to go knock on the correct persons door and "convince" them to cease their sniffing. I drove around the neighborhood and ran kismet for about 10 mins then had my router switch off. upon switching off my router I was still seeing it responding to kismet for about 2 mins before it dropped out. I have also had another IP log into my gmail ( traced back to the Nashville area ).

I just want to make this clear..I AM NOT SEEKING TO CRACK, HACK, OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. I only want to stop this from going on. I find data sniffing very intrusive and rude. I could use some help. I guess what I need to know is how to get definitive information with which to either report the activity or take care of it myself ( I guess I would just install a filter on their line...got a few left from my cable/HSD days).

Thanks for the help.

secure your wifi with a good long random complicated WPA2 password and it seems that would fix your problem. Let him sniff if he wants, just keep your network secure

+1 from me.

Directly confronting someone about this sort of thing can be an extremely dangerous proposition, and it would IMO be wrong for LQ to help you with that. You really can't stop people from sniffing wireless traffic anyway (or from setting up rogue access points, which is a completely separate issue). I agree with bret381 that your best bet is to make sure you've got your wireless security in order, so that any sniffing is non-productive for the bad guys. As for installing a filter on their line, that would constitute a denial-of-service attack and it should be obvious that an LQ member would be in violation of the LQ Rules if he/she lent you a hand with that.

lol. wow. Actually, I wouldnt have climbed the pole anyways ( just drops the sig in a certain band anyways). As to the things I am directly responsible for: used a kinda long password using wpa2. Guess I just have to deal with it. As I said, I just find it very rude and obtrusive to do things like that. Then again, I could be totally wrong any ways. it appears to be a worm hole hoola hoop of a learning curve; as, the more I learn the more I see I dont know. Dang it!! So I guess the jack-hole gets to get away with it for now. Thanks for the input guys.
