ClamAV scan with a LiveCD
 

I want to use a bootable 210 MB mini-cd to boot into my cousin's virus infected computer and clean it out. He's using windows 98.

I want to use ClamAV and if possible use their cable modem to update ClamAV temporarily by storing it in the ram with out saving any thing to the hard drive.

Are there any Linux Distros for doing this or do I need to make my own. My knowledge in Linux is very limited so the second option isn't really an option.

He's 16 or 17 but pretty dumb when it comes to... well, any thing. I want to mail him a bootable cd so he can use it on his computer as well as any one else's.

And it needs to be dummy prof. He should be able to put in the disk turn the computer on and the disk will do it all for him. A nice pretty GUI with plenty of eye candy would also be nice to tell him what was infected, changed, cleaned, deleted, what ever.

So he'll know it's done and he can remove the disk and reboot.

Is there some reason you don't want to permanently install an antivirus program on his machine? :confused:

Maybe you could use an online scanner like the one from Trend Micro.

To make a long story short, the computer belongs to his mom and she's a ignorant [REMOVED BY MODERATOR]. She wont let me any where near it. I've had Norton on there, I've had AVG on there. No matter what I do she manages to [REMOVED BY MODERATOR] it up.

Any time there's a problem she goes for the restore CD. We're talking years here. Nothing I can do any more for them. I gave up a long time ago on that thing.

The only reason I even want to do this is because he uses it and talk to him regularly on AIM and he says he's always having problems with it.

The same story can be applied to his [REMOVED BY MODERATOR] friends. I don't know how many time's I was able to install an AV on there computer from my house (which I live in a different state) and ran the updates and a few months later they mess it all up.

The best alternative is to install Linux and slap them in the face with a dead trout. But I would have to be there personally to do it and set every thing up just to make sure they don't mess any thing up, which is a guarantee for them.

I agree that his last comment can be interpreted as very insulting, so I've edited it out. I've also toned-down the language of his post in general (it was riddled with foul language), and I am closing this thread so it can rest in peace.
