Cell Modem Security questions

Hi, Would some one please inform me about Cell Modem Security? Is the data automatically encryped or should you really use a VPN server?
Thanks for your expertise!

I don't know, but I bet it isn't. It's how I connect all the time.

if you are asking about mobile broadband, it is widely used in many countries in all kinds of circumstances and thus i suppose it is sufficiently secure.

Yes, LTE data is encrypted between your device and the cell tower but once it connects to the internet backbone its just like any other traffic. However, there could be other threats like man in the middle attacks i.e. rogue cell towers.
