Can Firefox add-ons steal data like Chrome's extensions can?

When you install an extension for Chrome, you are warned that an extension can steal you data from Chrome (because it uses DOM I heard). What about add-ons of Firefox? The same thing?

Every application you run that is allowed to access data on your harddisk and access the net can obviously steal your data. This is the reason that you should only install applications (and add-ons) from trusted sources.
