hey all,
i'm the only user on my mandrake 10.1 system and i know the root password and all that (i can get root user in konsole with the whole su - thing) but i don't seem to get my root user priviliges when doing general customizing stuff. for example, on my desktop, i have a link to a mounted c: but i can't change the icon. the system wont let me rename and delete stuff in important places (i don't know the name of the location in question, but its vaguely the same as the windows system folder. i'm trying to change the STARt button if its any help).
so, do i need to "sign in" as root or something? i've got no idea, any help would be much appreciated.

btw, i would have RTFM but i dont know where the FM is (i burned my boot disk from an ISO)

You have several choices here. Either you can go to your console use su and when you have root permission you can type:
And then you get konqueror in root permission mode. You may see that is has a different theme than your desktop. Or you can do it by going to K-menu -> Run Command and type:
It will ask you for the root password in a dialog box. Type it and you'll get the same effect.

With your user account you can only change files under /home/username folder all other's require root user, part of the linux security. Only use your root account to change settings, not for everyday use.
