Can't delete file from memory stick

I am working in fedora core 6. i plugged my pen drive to copy some data fro there. Then in that one file and folder with i can't delete.
Both of them have r-xr-xr-x. I can't give write permission to the above as i am in root..
and i also tried the chown for chaging the owership to root. but that also failed.

the file name is SSVICHOSST.exe.
the message that i got while try for changing the file permission is
chmod:changing permission of SSVICHOSST.exe: Read only file system

So can i delete the files and format the stick.

How are you mounting the drive? Is it being automounted by Fedora? Is the drive formatted as NTFS? or FAT (i.e. try fdisk -l, or something similar to see what type of partition format you're using). Can you write files to the stick normally? Try copying over a document to see if it works.

One immediate thing you may want to try is to open a terminal, access the usb drive, and type sudo rm -rf SSVICHOSST.exe . If you can't copy over normal files to the drive, this won't work either.

shred it?

have you attempted to shred the file?

shred -ufz filename

That shouldn't care about protected space or permissions as long as you are su - root.
