c$

We occasionally have to check other workstations (win xp), to see if they have any weird software, etc. running. And I was wondering if there is a way to do this using a linux (fedora 3) workstation to search the xp workstation. In windows we'd map a drive using \\\ipadress\c$. Is there anything similar to this in linux.

You should be able to mount a windows share...
mount -t smbfs \\hostname\share mountpoint

Wouldn't those \'s be commented out? That would be executed as:

\hostname(whatever \s is...)hare

You should use:

\\\\hostname\\share

I think... Depends on the shell I guess.

EDIT: Or put it in quotes:

"\\hostname\share"

Also, Samba will work fine like //servername/sharename.

I access my Windows PC from Konqueror with a URL like this (it does prompt for password first time):
smb://DOMAINNAME\username@computername/C$/SomeFolder/Linux Servers/Firewall

If you are running a Windows AD Domain and want to access the Windows Machine via script or whatever, I think you can use Kerberos to not be prompted for the password every access. Once Kerberos is setup and initialized, you can use smbclient -k.
