Blank passwords??

Hi

I would like to change a user's password for a blank one. The system doesn't let me do this. I am using 'passwd username' command. When I change an entry in the /etc/shadow file ( simply I was trying to remove the encrypted password, then I am not able to log on the machine at all. Is there any relation with PAM? Please help me.

And it goes w/o saying that accounts w/o passes aren't good for system security unless they're system accounts w/o shell and all that.

There is also a definition in /etc/login.defs that let's you define that no password is required when logging in from "trusted" (local) consoles:

NO_PASSWORD_CONSOLE tty1:tty2:tty3:tty4:tty5:tty6

User accounts will still have passwords, it's just not asked upon login.
