Binutils is pretty much overal affected by this,
im educating myself in toolchain hardening.
but i want to learn more about the real issue and solution in the most educational way rightnow.
The educational way is to grab latest git/development code, check the ChangeLog, and try installing it. You can also check if the bugs have been reported, and what's happening to them.
