I'd recommend anything with SELinux out of the box, like Fedora Core 3. Compile your kernel with only the necessary modules and the like during install, and you'll save yourself some future hassles.

I'd also run Bastille (search Google for it) because it will automate security fixes pretty quickly and easily AAAAND it has a back-out feature (very useful).

Check out the member's choice awards 2004 for the security app thread and see what people have to say.

Happy fort'ing!

Depends on what you mean by "security oriented". If you are looking for a security-centric dlstro, then take a look at something like adamantix, trustix, immunix, hardened-gentoo, debian-hardened, Annvix, Engarde, or as azucaro mentioned a "bastilized" distro. If you really have security in mind, you might want to steer clear of a bleeding-edge distro like Fedora. Don't get me wrong, I really like Fedora, but it installs a ton of software with questionable security histories (take a look at the current number of patches for FC3). At the very least, do a minimal install or uninstall everything that you aren't going to use.

If you're looking for a distro with security tools, take a look at knoppix-std or FIRE. For a gateway/firewall distro try smoothwall or clarkconnect.
