Unhappy About Windows Me

I want to download a Linux OS but I currently have Windows Me. Will that work? I mean, can I do that? I've been doing some research and found that Windows Me doesn't allow the computer to use DOS promts or anything to do with the DOS system. Now this might sound stupid. I have absoulutely no idea what to do. I thought it would be best to see what the real experts have to say on the subject. I hope somebody will be able to help me. I am really new at this. Well if anyone can help, feel free. Thanks.

well, i know that a few people out there have a dual-boot with linux and ME going, so, yes, it's possible.

BUT.... if you're a newbie, i highly suggest that you buy a linux distro like red hat or suse... it's MUCH easier than installing from a downloaded package... it's about thirty bucks for a good distro, and you'll save yourself a lot of trouble.

I think from this your thinking you can install from a DOS prompt, in which yeah, ME doesn't really have a DOS prompt. If you have a fast connection even and a burner, you can just download a ISO image from lets say www.linuxiso.org and then burn your own cd of your choice of linux, and not have to pay for it. Just another suggestion for you. But yes, you can have Linux and ME on the same machine, dual booted, you can't have Linux within ME though unless your going to use something like VMware.

The only other thing I would add to this, is READ EVERYTHING you can BEFORE you make the leap. There are many HOW-TOs dealing with installing linux for the first time, and it behooves you to read them all.

i would suggest PM

I think you'll have a hard time with partitioning your hard drive.. and the easiest thing is to buy or download Partition Magic to partition your hard drive. its really easy to use and when you partition your hd it asks you if you are going to install another OS on that partition... Its just a thought ...

It's me! And I want to thank all the people who have put up advice on this topic for me. And if there are any other bits of advice you have for me please, don't hesitate to put them up. Any really good resource pages for a newbie. I've been to Hackers.com and it really helped. But I still have hundreds of unanswered questions. About all sorts of things. A few examples:

What is the best programing language for a beginner? I have had many tell me that it was something called "Python."

What EXACTLY happens when you "hack?" I mean, do you just get a bunch of documents on your screen. Or do you get to actually get to see what is on another computer? I am a strong believer in NOT modifying anything that doesn't belong to me. But when I actaully get in, what do I do?

And almost every hacking web site or textfile for newbies says to "hide your tracks" How do you do that? I mean is there something you type in a box? I know that sounds silly, but you do have to understand. I am good with computers, I figure out things by playing with them. But at the moment, I'm trying to get all the information I can before I start. Because, knowing me......I'll do something dumb and get in trouble.

First of all learn the difference between hacking and cracking if you ask me... Hacking is changing a program or an operating system as to serve you better. Cracking is to get into other people's computers and do stuff with them... I dont think people here is going to teach you anything about cracking... Actually when you get into a system what happens is you feel so excited for a few hours and play with their files and then you say to urself "did i work on getting into her/his computer for days for this?" and you feel kinda stupid. I used to do alot of it until i read some how-tos on linux... And if you are like me, you'll find other interests than just cracking into peoples computers. If you want to be a cracker, visit www.astalavista.box.sk but its not going to teach you alot. You'll learn the easy stuff. For the programming language i think C++ is the best..
