a question about biometrics for linux

Is there a good convenient (for the user) biometrics set up for linux systems that allow identification and authentication of users? Here's my problem we're finally moving into the 20th century. Unfortunately, the current system we're trying to replace doesn't have much in the way of authentication or even identification. We in the IT department would love to both identify and authenticate users to the system but senior management doesn't want to "complicate" the system. So, I was wondering if there were finger print verification devices with drivers and software for linux out there.

Thanks for any help in advance.

After a lot of searching I found this article and there are further links here. It sounds like quite an expensive option I you have a large number of employees.
