A good place to start?

I'm a fairly competent Ubuntu user (can compile and install things, troubleshoot problems, etc), but I have a serious lack in networking / port security. I've dabbled with LAMP on my laptop and I'm concerned I've left security holes.

Where do I start to address possible security problems on my machine? Can I port scan myself?
