[basic security question] Viewing passwords...

Hello,
Can I view passwords bearing in mind I am root. If so what is the command? This would avoid me having to change them.
Julien.

Nope - passwords are stored encrypted. Nobody can view them.

No you cannot as linux does not store plain text passwords. passwords are encrypted one way and stored in either /etc/shadow or /etc/passwd for some less comon configs.

But you can reset them. They are on the second column of the /etc/shadow table just after the first ":" just put "!!" instead there.

As root you can also change the passord of any user, without knowing it just type

passwd user

if you absoloutely NEED to know the user's password (instead of just change it or whatever) then you can use a password cracker if you want:
