That's just great....
Why get worked up about it? We got something that passes Vista by miles... care too guess?

XComposite, built-ins, XGL? Which are you talking about? There are several that either met or exceed Vista's "purdy" features.

with only minor more system needed.

Windows Aero disables itself when I play CSS:S and drops to Basic, but only if CSS:S is in full-screen mode. In windowed mode, it renders 3D Aero stuff and kills the framerate. Just discovered what exactly MythTV is, so now I'm thinking "to hell with Media Center." Thank you, rkelsen. Also, I read at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista that the Ultimate version of Vista will have DVD ripping. I actually do think the standard desktop for Vista is about as stable as my Ubuntu system. I'm sure the longhorn and business Vista editions will be riddled with server bugs and holes, though. Windows Aero is very pleasing to the eyes, however. Does anyone know of a similar GNOME theme like that? The 2 major complaints I have are its DRM craziness, and the fact that it ate grub.

Ever heard the phrase "wolf in sheep's clothing" ?

IF Vista comes with dvd ripping capability, you can bet your last dollar that it'll be packed full of DRM restrictions.

You're probably right, rkelsen. I never said it wouldn't be DRM crazy. At least you can be sure it's perfectly legal though. Have you seen the prices though? Outrageous.

Penguin, thx for the links. I'm going to try beryl. You know if it works as well as other WMs?

P.S. Anyone know how to make MythTV display on a secondary display of a computer without affecting the other screen or requiring me to login as the 'mythtv' user?

Beryl is a window manager, its just a bunch of eye candy. It has become quite stable actually as I hear few complaints about it now. I don't personally use it though.

It would appear so. Windows Vista has been released to volume licensees now. The release to the public will come soon enough. I wonder how well the reception will be? I don't imagine it will be like XP came out and everybody wanted a copy. I don't think Microsoft is doing as good a job this time convincing the public they need to upgrade.

Seems their going to try and show how XP is insecure and upgrading is inevitable.

Ballmer: Linux users owe Microsoft

He says the open-source operating system infringes on his company's intellectual property
Got to check out this one...

Sounds to me like another piece of FUD to scare you off Linux and force you into Vista. Microsoft must really be scared if they're willing to threaten to sue the WHOLE Linux community outside of SUSE.

Not suprised that the same guy who called Linux a cancer would spout this bullshit. The MS/Novell deal is just an attempt at MS to try and get code out of Linux legally, and to try and muck up a great OS.

MS claims to own the OS world, but they have yet to provide any proof that they have actually proivded any inovation to the operating system market outside of making an OS that is insecure, horribly slow, poorly programmed, but is popular due to strong-arm marketing tatics and having enough lawyers to make their illegal deals somehow, well, legal.

Quote:
Jones also challenged Ballmer to "put his money where his mouth is" and detail exactly what part of the Linux kernel source code allegedly infringes upon Microsoft patents, so that "folks will strip out the code and work around it or prove his patent invalid."

Ballmer did not provide details during his comments today. But he was adamant that Linux users, apart from those using SUSE, are taking advantage of Microsoft innovation, and that someone -- either Linux vendors or users -- would eventually have to pay up.
This pretty much sums up Microsofts claims. They have no proof of anything, and while they can keep trying to sling shit at the F/OSS community, it seems to just keep sliding off.

[QUOTE}"Only customers that use SUSE have paid properly for intellectual property from Microsoft," he said. "We are willing to do a deal with Red Hat and other Linux distributors." The deal with SUSE Linux "is not exclusive," Ballmer added.[/QUOTE}

This is also pretty much proof that they have no claims. The programs provided by SuSe in their RPM packages is not SuSe's property - its the coder. SuSe does not own the kernel, or anything outside of YaST/YUM/whatever system tool they use now. No distro does.

If M$ wants money for these fantastic claims, then they can look up the thousands of coders who suposedly violate M$s patents, then sue them each, one at a time, but I think they are just as afraid of being sued themselves for stealing ideas from other real operating systems (MacOS, Linux, ect), such as their whole "Aero" theme.

If they were going to, they would have. I think they are even more scared of a counter-lawsuit that would kill MS. I'm fairly sure it could be done (and that F/OSS community could probably privde more lawyers then MS could dream of)
