Not exactly a Linux installation media but Minix 1.2 (September 01, 1987) described in Andy Tanenbaum's book "Operating Systems: Design and Implementation."

Linus Torvalds bought that book in 1989 and according to wikipedia, it "changed Torvalds's life: he was fascinated by the clear structure of Unix and its underlying philosophy."

Torvalds used Minix 1.3 to start developing a couple of years later (January 1991) what was later known as Linux...

Hi all.
My first CD was SuSE 5.1 (it came with a magazine) in 1998.
The first distro was Red Hat 5.2 (3 CDs and manual) in 1999.
Have a nice day.

First I really used was Mandrake 6.0 in 1998 I think. Have those and DeadRat 5.2 still.
In fact i still use the background images for Eterm that came with Mandrake 6 I think
(different space background on each launch of Eterm).
A lot of images, have added some, used them ever since Mandrake 6 to 8.

A Caldera install CD. I had the box set that included Wabi and Netscape Server licenses, circa 1996. I used to have RedHat CD's on the wall but lost track of them during moves.

Kept a stack of 5-1/4" inch floppy disks for many years. Might still have them. Slackware I think.

This pair began the development of the State of California's GIS.
I tried Yggdrasil and saw the potential. Then found Slackware and GIS left the area of hot air and joined the area of real. Open Source is a mighty tool.
