Very nice, Jeremy. Thanks for taking the time to put it all together for the benefit of the Linux community, and thanks to all the admins and mods on the LQ staff for giving your time.
Hi Jeremy,
certainly hard work and successful as well. Congratulations to the redesign!
I have a couple of ideas for improvement:
1. Can you make the header(s) section more compact?
2. Can you make the main horizontal menu a bit larger?
For 1. - About 50% of the browser page is used by all kinds of headers (and advertising) with lots of white space. In Newspaper parlance they talk about "above the fold", meaning the headlines that are visible if a newspaper is presented fully folded on a newsstand. This is what needs to catch the users attention. In order to do that try to compact all the Logo/Menu/Advertisement/Hierarchy into a smaller space. Ideally 20% - 25% of a page when opened freshly in the browser (at reasonable sizes such as 800x600 or 1024x786.
I know positioning of advertising is important, after all this pays for the bills and allows the community to use this service for free. Therefore why not move the (some) advertisement after the original (first) post. Because if you can grab my attention with this, I'm inclined to read on and glance at the ad, but if I have to wade (scroll) through the ad in oder to get to my main point of interest, I might just bail out immediately.
For 2. - The menu needs to stand out a bit more. Larger font could do the trick or some kind of contrast color I'd also prefer if it was closer to the article and not interrupted by the ad. See comments above.
If it were not for this Website I would be completely lost with Linux. Novell's Suse Linux 10 is a very complicated operating system build for folks who already have a vast knowledge about computers and the Internet. Novell must consider ignorant users like me as a pain in the neck because they sure make it difficult to ask them anything about their system or comment about it.
My big regret here is that I do not have anything to offer the other members except my Profound Gratitude!!
I know this new layout was implemented a couple of days ago, but I never had the time to thank you for it - it's cleaner, softer on the eyes, and easier to use. A very big thank you to everyone who participated in the upgrade, especially Jeremy!
I hate to be negative after all the accolades, but i'm wondering what's happened to my cookies? LQ now makes me log in every time i come; never used to. I've deleted my LQ cookies 2 or 3 times, then log in to LQ, then come back another time, still have to log in. How come? How can i correct this? Thanks for any help.
My problem wasn't that i couldn't stay logged in, but that when i left and then came back later, i would have to log in. After following the advice in the 'can't stay logged in' thread, and trying it several times with no difference, here's what i finally did: First, i checked the 'remember me?' box when i logged in. Second, i just didn't log out. I had never been formally logging out before (i didn't even know how to logout), and only logged out now because i thought i had to do do to clear my cookies. Now, without logging out, i go offline, dial in again, and i don't have to log in. Is this not good form ? (I guess i just stay logged in all the time??)
