Good!! I suppose my brother, who is posted at the naval base in San Diego (whatever its name is), will have to learn Linux if he doesn't already know how to use it.

Does anyone have a prediction for what distro will be involved? I'm not supposing it will be any known distro, because the Navy could have a custom distro made if it doesn't mind the cost.

One of the reasons the military used many OS's on a ship was the fact that a hostile country would have a learning curve trying to use their equipment. At one time they did some very special changes to the OS that unless known, would limit use of the systems. It may not be such a great idea to use too much linux.

In the USA it was common in tv and film to have actors playing Russians. These actors would say dramatic and outlandish propaganda simulating what one might hear in the USSR.

As with all military hardware there is some form of defense either in production or on the drawing boards.

To shoot down a drone is pretty easy. To take it over and land it is quite a different thing. That would be a neat trick.

Exactly bad acting simulation.. because if exactly adopted and translated you might find a lot of similarities with own military style:)
Strange sometimes you poke in military stuff and find cool military stuff and sometimes cheap chine junk covered with rubber like kid toys. As i remember military liked unique custom design in old days. On other hand in some military areas all look like take for free it just lying around.

I was supposed to visit Vladivostok in the 80's. We had access to the English versions of the Voice of North Korea and all broadcast radio on the East coast of USSR. Their own translations were pretty funny. Examples were just like the movies. For example this is one that I recall. "Today the puppet regime of the outlaw nation sent warships to threaten the Official Republic of Korea's shores"

Let's hope they don't choose Damn Vulnerable Linux...

I don't understand, unless you mean Damn Small Linux, and would they really want that? You'd think their computers are modern enough to handle a larger distro than DSL.

Sadly Damn Vulnerable Linux doesn't seem available any more, I wanted to download it a while back and was disappointed to see it has been discontinued.
Unless that's because the US Navy have taken it over?:eek:

Hmm, I see...Damn Vulnerable Linux was a test/study distro intentionally designed with security flaws. (I thought you people might be making some kind of joke; it's partly because Damn Small Linux's name always made me tend to not take it very seriously, and the same thing with Damn Vulnerable. I can think of many better names for Damn Vulnerable, such as "Breakable Linux" and "Punching Bag Linux.") Unless the whole point of this was simply to insult the United States military, why would the Navy want its computers to run broken software? That defeats the purpose of switching to Linux; if they want junk, they can keep Windows.

I remember booting up to BASIC, yes really was basic, to control some missiles. Took almost 3 hours to boot up ready to launch. Hope they fixed that.

Anyone else who speaks Japanese and has lived there for a few years might be much more willing to feel that the film is not that far off. I don't think that film is that far off the mark at all.

Sadly the Japanese who worked on biological weapons and testing were exempt from war crimes trials. The US offered the doctors and scientist freedom to teach the US what they had learned. They conducted thousands of biological tests on Chinese. Captured films show prisoners being used as test subjects and even whole villages being tested on without their knowledge. Women and children were just as good subjects to them.

There was some concern not too long ago that Japan was going to recover their islands that Russia took at the end of WW2 Not sure why they just don't offer to pay Russia for the islands to get them back. The US was kind of worried Japan was going to try to take the islands by force.

Don't look just at words.. :) imagine you watch this movie in dark room (theater) with crowd and someone during this film shouting "death to japanse pigs". Account narration, half hearing voice, negative personal affection to jap people from narrator. This is just bright example of technics that a little higher level then stupid speaks on radio/films etc.. Germans and probably soviet(a little bit later),church used somewhat same technics of psy warfare. Past days? nope:) not long ago i speaked with some jews from israel.. guess who is a little military brainwashed?:)
