after ballance the hardware spec between ubuntu/windows vista package, difference ~USD50. I wonder the Windows Vista Home edition so cheap?
Basically, when you purchase a new PC with Windows preinstalled, you're only paying for Microsoft's license fee. You only pay the full price for Windows when you buy the boxed version to install it yourself.
Cheers

dell.com/open is where you go to purchase a Ubuntu system. You can also navigate from the main site in the drop down menu.
Price the same XPS 410 [Vista Home Premium] and 410n [Ubuntu] system. Don't forget to get rid of the speakers. The difference is $40... But don't stop there... Shipping is free for the Vista system, and $30 for the Ubuntu one. I guess it must weight more.
Your final saving: $10... What do I get for that? A free OS I could have downloaded myself, and no Vista Home Premium license.
And the laptop systems are even worse. The price difference is a result of the native intel graphics chipset vs. a dedicated 256MB ATI card. For that difference you could not even buy 1/2 of that card.
Don't forget to add the 1gb upgrade to the E1505N system, to bring it in line with the E1505. Shipping is free for both. Still a $50 difference and not the $100-500 that some are quoting. Though its a Vista Home Basic under the E1505, and you are getting crap for a video card under the E1505N.

Exactly- Vista Home "Basically-There's-No-Reason-To-Buy-This", and you are getting "crap for a video card."
And I've not seen anyone claiming $100-$500 savings. If someone is offering to pay that much themselves to sell Ubuntu on Dell, PLEASE send me the link; I'll buy from them. I was just getting ready to order mine...
That's "crap for a video card" on the Ubuntu system... Unless you are saying that you are agreeing with me? I would have to read that twice.
You're right- my apologies. I misread your post. However, the video requirements of Vista is directly aimed at power gamers; That's one reason so many businesses and gov agencies (both home and abroad) are looking into Linux and Mac.

There are many reasons not to upgrade to Vista.
That quote came from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which, in past years, helped M$ become what they are today by deeming their software an 'industry standard'.
And let's not forget the "non-existent" security breaches that have been found since the second week after Vista was released...
