I got one the babies as a gift for my birthday. now that I have been playing with it for a few days, I am completely clueless
As to what it is good for. It's too big to be an mp3 player, too big to be a phone, and it cannot to anything (except email and web browsing) that a traditional portable computer can do. It cannot be networked without jail breaking (which voids any warranty); it cannot print except with the aid of software installed on another computer; the bluetooth only works with headphones or keyboards (you cannot transfer any files from anywhere via Bluetooth. The only way I can see of transfer any files is by the use of an. Online storage site like Dropbox.

I might feel different after using if for a while longer, but so far it is nothing more than a large PDA. I, have however, installed some apps from the app store, which makes it a little usable as an actual tool instead of a very expensive TOY.

If Apple meant for this thing to replace net books, in my opinion they have failed. My Acer Netbook runs circles around my iPad.

I feel for you. I got an ipod Shuffle(previous gen) as a present but at least it's quite usable. I can't stand crApple but at least they didn't spend alot for it, relatively speaking. I actually like the small size and design...but if I had to buy one myself I'd probably choose a Sansa or something. I load it songs using Linux apps of course.
It's funny that I actually own an apple product now.

Re: jailbreaking & warranty - if you have a warranty claim you should be able to restore it to factory state and no one will know the difference.

I agree with you that a netbook is a real computer and far more useful. I'm waiting for a linux-based tablet that offers flexibility. If I was given an ipad as a gift (and couldn't return it or sell it!) I'd use it mostly to read newspapers or ebooks since I do a lot of reading.
