reminds me of redhat, kinda freaky. Then again SuSE seems to be aimed twards the appeal of windows users. Just look at the default KDE wallpaper..blue skies, green grass.
So now its time to to get some *nix users on board. It's cool and all, but a bit obvious.
All in around I wish them well. I wish they wouldn't make it so obvious that they are just trying to make a quick buck. Every interview I see or read just says it over and over again.
Sorry, just a slack/debian hound blowing some steam...
Is this free d/l of Novell Desktop Linux a time-limited copy?
I went through the signup process out of curiousity, but it was unclear. A 30-day trial was mentioned, but was that for support, or is it for the actual Linux software? (That sounds sinister, a 30-day limit on anything Linux)
The only reason I did this was to maybe try it out at work; no chance I would take it home to use. Heck, I unloaded Redhat at home when they changed their business model.
True: It just looks like en extremely colorless version of Red Hat. Sitting here with the yummy look&feel of my newly installed Ubuntu, these images just look like dung.
Novell Linux.Well, this gives SCO another chance to cry foul and file another lawsuit against Novell for breaking a non-compete agreement.I hope the product's good.If it is half as good as Suse is,it would be a success.
But certainly a time limited version of Linux is certainly not required.Much like Lycoris and Linspire,it would really sour the spirit of Linux.
I believe the limit is just on support. I think I even saw on their site somewhere that it would continue to function after 30 days(w/o updates). Actually, I like it. It did better hardware detection on my laptop than anything, and is probably the most usable Linux distro out of the box that I've tried, atleast on my hardware.
if it is stable and user-friendly, i think it is cool.
we switched every computer in our small business (only 6 computers, lol) to linux last year, thanks in no small part to novell and SUSE. it made the switch very painless, especially with yast (glad they os'ed it).
now we are changing each computer over one-by-one to faster distros (slack and yoper on most). we are greatful to novell for the part they played in the initial switch, and the part they continue to play (when we get a new system in, say a notebook that needs to be on the road immediately, we will install Suse-9.2 now-until we have time to tweak).
the vast majority of the US economy is based on sm business. OpenSource, linux (all distro's), projects like OpenOffice, etc, is helping sm businesses like ours, invest more in r&d and our own income base. which in turn expands the economy and grows tax revenues for uncle sam.
i pray that uncle sam doesnt crawl into bed (any further) with MS and begins to see that Linux can have a tremendous effect on sm business profitability and growth.
i'm glad for novell and their contributions (things like yast), and even more impressed and thankful for the linux and os community as a whole.
It really has everything bundled nicely... All Media Files Play... you can now, Right Click any file from the Desktop or Any Tree, and SEND TO: Using Evolution
They have made the File Manager weird though... taken the Buttons away, Back, Up etc...
It works fine for a regular user though!
