Wow that would be great. My good friend and I have been talking about creating a distro, but in time. Maybe someday we can pitch in and see where it goes. Good luck with it!
It would be better to give some information before asking for help:
1. What is your design-goal?
2. What will your distribution have that other distributions with the same design-goal lack?
3. Will you make it from scratch or is it just another Ubuntu spin-off?
4. How much work is already done?
5. What is your experience level in Linux in general and in creating distros?
Thanks kasl_33 for the good luck, and would love to here how it goes with you friend building a distro.
and again, thanks for the reply TobiSGD.
1. The design goal for the distro is to have some just purely different to what is out there. I've been using Ubuntu for a good few years now, but starting to dislike the way it is heading, so I started looking for something else that to replace it. After not find one that really felt right to me, I figured I could make my own and the idea went on from there.
2. Really we are aiming to have something that is simple enough for new users to linux can use but with the the more complex side to it for the more advanced users, most importantly though, we want all this to be rolled off a live cd.
3. We was looking at just working from scratch, but now have decided to take all options into concideration. One of the options is a Ubuntu spin-off, but it is more of a last resort for us. The plan at the moment is to set up different instances and look at what fits the bill most, one of the options I am working on at the moment is OpenSuse, and Debian is another option on the plate along with Fedora and Linux from Scratch.
4. So far I have got a OpenSuse version almost ready to be used as a comparison which was built in Suse Studio and work has been started on LFS, but have come up with plenty of problems in it, which is what got us looking at spin-off's.
5.The problem really is, me and my mate who's also working on both have plenty of experience in working with and on Linux with many distro's in servers and desktops, but our experience doesn't go a huge distance when concerning building distro's and if we do go down the path of LFS then we could really do with some help from someone with a bit more experience. Once the base is built we are fine. But we both has our area's we are better working in.
Obviously there is we can do but there's stuff we can, or can do as well as well as others, which is why we're looking for more team members, all members will have the opinions heard concerning the distro and will not be forgotten about concering credits so to speak. We arnt just looking at this for a small little project, but something that we would like to see people use. but it all has to start from somewhere, and this is where it starts. When we have our comparisons ready, the whole team will be able to discuss which we feel is the better option and so on, along with default packages and all other matters.
Hope this answer everything but please feel free to ask anything else. Thanks again for the replyes.
