A typical, google affiliated, mainstream "modern" web browser such as firefox, chrome, etc, sends more data to google and various 3rd parties than an OS such as Windows 10 - and again the supposed "Linux distro" Android is a sophisticated "free" surveillance suite. While I don't agree with bundled spyware in an OS, Mickeyshaft are not exactly the pioneers of this and not really doing anything so different to the other vendors. The anti-privacy options in Windows 10 seem to be more configurable - for now - than in Android where you install programmes which demand access to location, camera and microphone and there seems to be no easy methods for disallowing that - other than not installing the programme in the first place.

I don't see this as an MS specific problem, it's more of the current trend of using "consumer" devices as data mining and surveillance platforms - that's the unethical behaviour from the industry as a whole.

A relative of mine uses Windows and won't accept anything else. They are mainly concerned with Netflix and plugging in portable devices, etc. This is what led me to researching the upgrade from 7 to 10, to see if it was still allowed (post #2) and it still is. In their case I cannot and will not, persuade them to switch to using another OS if it will cause them hassle and inconvenience and stop them doing what they want to do.

I am sure many users of Win7 will continue to use Win7.

That'a my point - they are "opt out", as are the similar options in Windows 10...

I'm with sevendogsbsd as far as recent Windows experience. I haven't used it since '04 and I stopped working on Windows when Vista came out because scrubbing toilets for minimum wage is less disgusting.

"I'm so sorry that this is happening to you." if I can't say nothing at all, the courage to change my init system or even my kernel if I want to, the wisdom to know that the difference between myself and the average Windows user is too significant to bridge with reason or common sense, and the nihilism to enjoy what's left of my life anyway.

I'm not smart enough to understand Android. I found a copy to virtualize on my Hyperbola GNU/Linux box the other day and I still can't figure out why anyone would think that it is acceptable for software to treat its users that way.
