Microsoft's Ballmer forced to eat his Linux words
Quote:
MICROSOFT CEO Steve Ballmer has triggered a PR nightmare for his firme over his threats to down Linux with intellectual property based lawsuits.
Not only has his new Linux chum Novell issued a statement which said it disagreed with what Steve whispered to the press, Volish spinners have had to issue a statement toning down his original comments.
Ballmer had claimed that Microsoft's patent cooperation agreement it pushed on partner Novell was a way to protect corporate users of the SUSE Linux operating system from potential lawsuits.
Computerworld hacks have found a few SuSE Linux customers fuming at being called a "undisclosed balance sheet liability" by Ballmer and were never worried about being sued by Microsoft.
We still have to remember that most people who are unfamiliar with Linux will see Balmer's statement and believe he can actually sue people for using Linux. I've had to explain to at least 3 different people that Linux is free, and Balmer is speaking lies.
As the article states, Microsoft loves FUD. It still works, although not as well as it used to.
One thing that springs to mind over the last 5 years, espeacially with comments like this, micro$oft must be really starting to worry. This little hackers/geek software in the 90's has now forced a billion dollar company to incorparate alot of it's own security models, delay it's release for 2 years and throw as much mud as it can so hopefully something will stick
