Mandriva purchases Lycoris Assets
 

It seems like Mandriva (formerly Mandrake) is at it again. This time they have bought some assets from Lycoris (formerly Redmond Linux). Here is an extract from the release announcement,

Mandriva is on to something. This guy knows how to make a distro look good and so does connectiva.

With their solid aquisitions lately, I hope we'll see Mandriva be the introduction distro of choice for newbies (seems mostly for individuals for now, though, and not for enterprises).

They can accomplish this by providing (not to say that they do not, but anything can be improved):

• an easy installer
• sane (and secure) defaults (they seem to have that, can't remember if the firewall was enabled by default though)
• easy and painless software installation. i.e. improved auto-resolving of dependencies, etc.
• laugh all you want, but: good graphic design. I know a WinME user who wants to upgrade to WinXP because it looks 'cooler'

I don't want them to make a distro specifically for newbies, but something thats well polished and attractive to both newbies and long term users.

Not to start a war, but there is almost always a tradeoff between maximizing the intended audience and ensuring best quality for a certain (small but important) group...

Well for years Mandrake was regarded as one of the most newbie friendly distros but it still attacted a lot of advanced users. This is the kind of distro that I would like it to be, simple enough for newbies to install, setup, and use but also full of features for advanced users.

I'd say amen to that reddazz. I really appreciate how it (mandrake/mandriva) is really friendly but packs a punch.

nah- it's too short of a time. people are still calling it mandrake! so no, I don't think so (but I have been wrong before)

besides, I guess the name must have been part of the takeover deal.

I liked it better when it was Mandrake. Mandriva sounds too much like drival.
