Arrow Make The Move website launched!

Greetings,

I wanted to post to the news forums about a new web site that I've launched, http://makethemove.net.

It is a website is designed to promote Linux and open source software as viable alternatives to Windows and other computer systems. I uses simple English to help non-technical people understand what it's all about.

Please check out the site and shoot me an email to let me know your thoughts! If you like the site, please also help spread the word

There is also a little web advertising button thing you can add to your websites if you want, here:

Cheers!
Chris

In the event that this gets closed as advertising, I would like to say before it does that this is a very well designed and informative site. It is low-key, and not "in-your-face". The information is well presented (although a few typos) and honest.

I have bookmarked it, and will forward the link to people who are interested.

Well done!

I have to say it is a beautiful website design. Thats exactly the way I design my website, simply colours, simple but modern looking gfx and using all avaliable space.

Well Done!

Don't panic, I treat these as press releases and approved it.

So it's unlikely to be closed as advertising.

Reading it now, and my first impressions are good I especially like the nutrality between Desktops and Distros

Here are some recomendations:

Quote:
"But how can they do all this for free?" I hear you ask. The Linux and open source communities do all this for free because they love the software, not because they try to make money from it. They are doing it for prestige, honour and because they believe in open source ideals.
In a perfect world in reality some do it for love and others are paid by big companies like IBM and Red Hat in mutual symbosis. Red Hat and IBM both benfit from Linux being High quality, Linux benifits from Red Hat and IBM giving money and developers

(big easily ingorable suggestion: ) I'd Replace "What about my Data?" and "Other Considerations" with one section, that should cover how you can work with Windows on you're linux computer. Mention support for windows files in Linux (e.g. doc & Open Office) Emulators and Dual booting (notibly absent). Also include points like Samba that says it can work with a windows network. As for you're point about open file formats, move that several versions up to the "what is FOSS" section as another reason you can trust FOSS but not M$

I would really say you should add Debian (etch) & PCLinuxOS to the list of popular distributions to try.

I have one complaint about the site. Since we're helping you publicise the site, what about a link back? LQ is the biggest Linux forum on the web after all.

It would actually be a good idea anyway to let people know that once they've gone ahead and switched that there is a forum available to help with any problems they have. Getting help is part of making the switch.

Nice site. Like the others though, I'd also encourage creating a section for Help/Questions/Support with links to LQ, perhaps a couple of Linux magazines, etc.

Great looking layout either way

Thumbs up Thanks everyone

Hi All,

Thanks for your thoughts on the website. I have a lot of changes on the way and a lot of the things I want to implement are suggestions you hae already made (i.e. mentioning large companies and a support section).

Thanks for all your thoughts. I will certainly be recommending linuxquestions.org as part of teh support section

It will just take a while as I have to sync and arrange all translations too

Also I emailed the team asking for permission before I posted this on the news section.

Thanks! Please help spread the word around. There is a button you can add to your websites / blogs etc here:

http://makethemove.net/images/promo/mtmbutton.png

Cheers!
Chris
