LQ Zero Reply Drive

Based on the success of the last LQ Zero Reply Drive, we're going to have another one. Based on feedback we may even make this a regular event.

One of the main goals of LQ is to help members get questions about Linux answered. One way we help facilitate this is with the "Zero Reply" functionality, which allows you to easily find threads with no replies. In the spirit of helping other LQ members, we're having another "Zero Reply Drive". The latest LQZRD will start at noon today (LQDT) and run for 96 hours. During that time, I invite everyone to click http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...p?do=noreplies and attempt to answer as many questions as they can.

Keep in mind that if you'd like to search for threads on specific topics that have 0 replies, you can do so using the advanced search (Find Threads with -> At Most -> 0 Replies). While we appreciate you regularly checking the Zero Reply list for threads you can help answer, I'm hoping a concerted effort raises the bar here at LQ further. If this is successful we'll consider doing it more regularly. Your help is much appreciated.

If you have any ideas on how we can further facilitate questions being answered at LQ, please let us know in this thread.

The latest Zero Reply Drive has officially started with 348 Threads with 0 replies (from the last month).

A stats update with 24 hours remaining:
Quote:

207 Threads with 0 replies (from the last month)
That's a reduction of 141. Let's see how low we can get that number.

salasi 04-05-2010 06:30 AM

I'm not sure how you reached that number (I'm not saying that it is wrong, just that I don't know...) but is there any chance of excluding 'Success Stories' from that count?

It doesn't, to me, seem to be an issue if Member Success Stories don't get an answer. So, if success stories are included (and the success stories sub-forum is being correctly used, which may be an issue), it will 'artificially' keep up the number, and this could distort the figures, if we ever get them down so far that these are a significant fraction.

jeremy 04-05-2010 09:34 AM

I've added Member Success Stories to the exclude list (which brought the current count with 90 minutes left in the drive from 176 to 175).

jeremy 04-05-2010 11:03 AM

As of noon LQST the number of Threads with 0 replies (from the last month) is 172, which is an over 50% reduction from when the drive started. I'd definitely consider that a success and would like to thank everyone who participated. We're still looking for feedback on how often we should have these and how you think we can better promote participation here at LQ.

My thanks to all that participated. I think this would be useful to do every 3 months, to clear it down - but we should fix it so that the drive doesn't happen around major holidays like Christmas. So do it April-July October-January?

XP those have major US holidays, I guess you could do Jan but would go better if not in the first two weeks.

April not near the 15th, that is when US Federal Taxes need to be filed.

July the 4th is US independence day.

October at the end is Halloween, all the goblins come out.

XavierP 04-05-2010 05:20 PM

Then you need to organise your country better. Do I have to do everything around here? :) Just kidding.

Though, with all that said, there is unlikely to be one perfect day every 3 months - when we're quiet, somewhere else will have something major going on. Though, Halloween isn't a real holiday outside the US (and even then, is it really?), Christmas does affect a huge chunk of the planet and is probably a bad time to run anything large on LQ - particularly since Jeremy will have other things on his mind!

February, May, August, November may be a better split?

If you have kids it's the 3rd most important holiday after Christmas and the Fourth of July.

No matter which days you choose would probably interfere with someones schedule. Just trying to ruffle your feathers.

brianL 04-05-2010 06:50 PM

February 29th? :)

XavierP 04-05-2010 09:49 PM

That or the eleventy eleventh of each month.

bcwagne 04-06-2010 01:03 AM

So, the LQ Spy is pretty cool. Is there a way for that to only show zero reply threads?

GrapefruiTgirl 04-06-2010 01:07 AM

@ bcwagne,

No, the Spy can show you either EVERY post made as it is made, or only posts/threads that you are subscribed to (using the checkbox near the upper left area). It is cool though. :)

Very very cool. Better than watching TV, that's for sure.

It would be more effective to have them at least once a month. If I post a thread and it does not receive an answer within a week I give up with the problem and move on or find a work around. It would be nice to know how many of the zero reply posts that are a month or so old that the OP responds to.

pix9 04-06-2010 06:37 AM

Hello friends, Zero Reply Drive is very Interesting concept, I would like to participate it will all efforts I can, for the moment I am still a student and know very little about Linux. But I would like contribute to this with whatever possible. My best wishes with zero reply :)

thank you
regards

custangro 04-06-2010 02:21 PM

I actually hope Zero Reply Drive becomes a regular feature at LQ

August would be a great month because it doesnt have any holidays at all, should work towards doing it every quarter which would be 4 times a year

H_TeXMeX_H 04-07-2010 10:32 AM

I don't think doing it every month would work well, it's too often. Maybe every 2-3 months.

jeremy 04-07-2010 11:04 AM

I'd agree that every month is probably too often. I'd say it's down to either bi-monthly (Feb/Apr/June/Aug/Oct/Dec) or quarterly (Jan/Apr/July/Oct).

Quarterly would be a good way to start

jeremy 06-08-2010 01:31 PM

Update: Moving forward we'll be doing these quarterly (so mid-Jan/Apr/July/Oct). Thanks for the feedback. Additional suggestions are welcome.

Not strictly zero reply drive related, but zero reply related.

Can you automatically exclude zero reply posts from the zero replies list, where the OP has marked it as solved before anybody else has posted ?

(they usually don't post what they did, or just edit their own post to add "never mind")

There seem to be quite a few of those looking back through the pages.

Similarly, the LQ bot posts show up in zero replies as do member introductions. I'm sure they all deserve a response but they aren't actually people looking for answers, which I presume is what we are trying to service with the zero reply list.

Thanks.
