LQ ISO Linux Download Site Reaches One Million Downloads
From our recent press release:
LinuxQuestions.org is proud to announce that LQ ISO has now facilitated over 1,000,000 Linux downloads. Founded in August of 2004, LQ ISO allows users to find and rate fast local download mirrors. The site currently allows you to download almost 120 different Linux distributions from over 430 different mirrors. The site now utilizes GEO IP data to help you find the fastest local download mirror. --jeremy |
cool! :D
keep it up  |
Wow, I had no idea LQ ISO was turning in those kinds of numbers. That's excellent. Are there any month by month breakdowns? I'd be curious to see those numbers if they are available. Along those lines, would it be possible to track the downloads by members vs. non-members? If so, it would be interesting to see what kind of reach LQ ISO is having beyond the LQ community. -- J.W.

There is no login to LQ ISO, so that's unfortunately not something we can track (it would be interesting). To give you an idea of growth, I'd like to shoot for 2-3 million downloads for the next August-August period. If you've never used LQ ISO, check it out and let us know what you think. If you like it, let others know about it. We think it's a great resource and are glad to help facilitate as many Linux downloads as possible.

Wow! I had no idea it even existed... I have been refering posters to outside sources for .iso's and they were right here all along...
See, ya learn something everyday here... KC |
Well done!

Looking at the site, we could probably do a better job of promoting LQ from within LQ ISO. Let me give that some thought (in the meantime I am open to ideas).

Are you sure the reverse is not true Jeremy? Like I had posted above, I have been on LQ for awhile and did not know about LQ ISO... I think that when searches are made about Linux, LQ is usually one of the top picks but if looking for Linux .iso's I never see LQ as an option...

We could always do a better job I suppose. LQ ISO is in the main menu and on the forum homepage. We also recently added the random text strings in the upper right, which serves to highlight some addition LQ projects, including:
http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/ http://radio.linuxquestions.org/ http://iso.linuxquestions.org/ http://bookmarks.linuxquestions.org/ http://jeremy.linuxquestions.org/ I've also mentioned it on the LQ Podcast. If anyone has any additional ideas, I'm always listening. --jeremy |
kencaz has a fair point, I just searched google for "linux iso", and the first thing that I came across from lq was LinuxQuestions.org - Boot Linux iso from thumb drive - where Linux ..., is it likely that someone will stumble across lq iso and not across the forums? I'm not trying to put down lq iso at all, maybe make it easier to find, I didn't know it existed until this post.

Wow, that's an extraordinary number of downloads! Great job Jeremy, and same goes for the mods and members who help keep this site going! Well done, and congrats! ;)

Number of Linux users
If a statistical survey was made, asking how many of an amount of linux users downloaded their copy from LQ ISO - we could estimate the number of linux OS users in general.
|
you could say 1million downloads = 1million users however this is not the case. hardcore linuxers mess it up by trying a new linux every so often.
